History
Walter O’Leary Hobbs has been visiting the southern Appalachian Mountains since
childhood. In 1967 his family established a summer home on Lake Burton, In Rabun
County, Georgia, and for the past 35 years he has been visiting and exploring the
mountains and streams in and around Rabun County, and the Southern Appalachians.
The Technique
All of his photography of this area is made with medium format cameras including HasselbladTM,
and MamyiaTM. The medium format gives a greater image area and allows for larger prints with
greater detail. The color and elements in the photographs are exactly as they appeared at the
time the images were captured on film. Each image has fixed a unique moment in time at special
locations in this region.
Filters are used sparingly, and only to compensate for the film’s limitations in capturing what
the human eye sees. The films used are slow speed, fine resolution transparency films,
processed by a select film lab. All of the prints are reproduced in the photography lab on
photographic paper, and each is an original photographic print. The images have not been
digitally re-created.
Each of the prints is framed in wood under UV filtering Plexiglas, and matted with archival
quality, acid free paper. UV Plexiglas is used for its safety and its ease in hanging and
handling, and to preserve the longevity of the print.
